Here as they say is my standard advice to all college freshmen. Get involved in one or two clubs on campus that interest you. Commit to go to the meetings, attend their events and get involved by volunteering to help on projects. Don't go over board, one or two is enough. These people will become the basis of your friends on campus. These will be your closest attachments and the people you will remember years from now. This is particularly important on large campuses with tens of thousands of students, but it can help on smaller campuses too. If you are on a sports team, think about only adding one club. Again, don't overload, you've got classes, remember?
I've spent years with college kids and can tell you this is the most practical advice I know.

I'd hate to say it, but you really can't. Sheltering a child for too long doesn't help them in any way. College is about getting out from under the parental control in part, and establishing yourself as an adult. Learning to deal with the new life that college brings is a formative part of that growth.

Reasure your love for them, your support for them and also tell them that it is always he feeling the first time.
Tell them stories of how you felt also when you were in college, or whatever story even be a lie just so you can reassure them
