Actually, it's not that difficult to make a crude version.

Find wormwood at one of those herbal shops. Have you ever made sun tea? Same idea, put Pernod in a clear bottle, add the wormwood, and place it on a windowsill where it won't get knocked over. Let it sit for 2 or 3 days. Filter it through a screen. It will taste nasty.

You'll have to experiment with the quantities. Many years ago, my roommate and I made some for my birthday party, but made it so strong we both passed out on a few ounces; we had to cut it with 3 more bottles of Pernod.

Hide you car keys before you start and don't plan anything else for the evening. It wasn't exciting enough for us to ever repeat the experiment, it took us forever to go through the stuff. I think half of it was still left when I moved out.

You can buy absinthe and wormwood extract at http://www.maltose.com . All you have to do is mix it with some vodka or dillute puregrain alcohol.

the real stuff or the fake stuff? if you want the real stuff, get lots of wormwood as well as fennel and anise. learn basic alcohol production and distillation. it's not as easy as you think. if you read something that seems too simple, it's probably a cheap immitation that will not be anywhere near the real thing and might even be dangerous.

Dont blow up your kitchen. I have bought bottles of it in Europe though, and have yet to taste it.
