A lot will depend upon the state where this happened. In CA, there is a minimum of 1 day in jail up to whatever the court feels appropriate.
Asking what you should do on a site like this is dangerous. You should go to the arraignment (the date on the letter) and plead not guilty (even though you are, it just means you want your lawyer to look at the case).
If you can afford an attorney - get one, if not - they will appoint one for you. Then tell your attorney everything and they will advise you the best thing to do in your situation.
Good Luck!!

Well, you just confessed, so Guilty asured. Since it's petty theif, you most likely will be fined and community service or a few weeks in county lock up. Ask the lawyer for the best advice.
You can try the speech, which my earn points with the jury if you pleed not guilty and go to trial.
Since the cops never made an arrest, and just questioned you, I can't see how there is a case anyway.

lawyer - go the court and ask for a free lawyer. they are right there. guilty plea - usually, they will give you a deal if you plea guilty on your free deal right away. specially if this is your first time, and you didnt steal much. the best - talk to your lawyer, dont handle it yourself. otherwise - ask the prosecutor for a diversion. it can be volunteer time or a donation to some church or hospital (and yes, your donation will be tax deductible). and one more important thing - dont steal, guy! it's a sticky charge, and is not worth it unless you steal millions)) one more thing! regardless of the criminal record (which will show up if you are convicted), the internal police record will remain until the day you die. it is used for internal police use only, and is different from the criminal record, but that thing will sit there forever, regardless of the court decision.

A misdemeanor as an adult will have permanent consequence on your ability to work, attend school, own firearms etc. etc.. A public defender is good, but will likely plea bargain your case down to something. You need to get it reduced to something lower than a misdemeanor. If the PD will not play along, you need to get a good criminal attorney to attempt to get the charges reduced. Pleading guilt puts you at the mercy of the court. If the judge is pissed, you get the max, jail time and the MD on your record to boot. If he is feeling nice, you get a reduciton and probation.
Don't take chances on someone elses demeanor! Get a lawyer. Plead not guilty. Go to trial and hope that your story (or your lawyers bargain) gets you what you want.
If you do nothing, the system will grind you into it. An MD on your record will pretty much nuke your chances of ever becoming a responsible citizen. You can't even get a home loan....
If you have to go into debt to get a lawyer, then do it. You need to tell your parents also. They need to help you through this. Borrow money or whatever, but allowing yourself to get smoked in court is silly.

If you are guilty then you must do the right thing and plea
guilty. To lie would be the worse thing you can do. Do not prepare a speech...the judge will do the talking and asking of questions. You stole and he will want an answer why and I suggest it not be, "I DON'T KNOW."
You know inside why so be truthful and answer it in that manner. This your first offense could be anything...always be prepared for the worse.

logically, you stole them item, it doesn't matter that you left them behind, you had INTENT. I would plead guilty, show remorse and ask for forgiveness. First offense, probably probation. But keep in mind, this stay on your record for life now. Ya know there are food shelters if you need food, and 1/2 way houses that are there to help you if you need it. Maybe you should plan on spending sometime at one of those facilities, helping others out. It would give you a different perspective on life. Be good to yourself by behaving. hugs

you are guilty pal, your 18, I think if you don't pay the consequences you'll do it again, maybe sometime worse. I worked with teenagers for years and the ones who's parents got them out of trouble, got in worse trouble. Be a man and take your punishment, And good luck to you !!

If there is any possibility of jail time, they should have offered you an attorney. The attorney is who you should be asking these questions.
Don't take the advice of random anymous people on the internet, especially when it involves pleadings for a criminal act.
