White flour is made by bleaching then sterilizing the grain with chemicals to make it white and soft. This process destroys almost all vitamins, and minerals (the "good stuff") so next they try to "enrich" the grain with the same vitamins, minerals they destroyed in the first place.
Wholemeal (American call it whole wheat) bread has about the same calories with white bread. However, wholemeal bread contains more fibre. Therefore, eating it more often can help us consume less calories because it helps fill the stomach quicker. The result is we end up eating less total bread.
In addition to that, eating foods high in fibre helps speed up the movement through the digestive tract. That means less time for fatty acids to be absorbed before it is eliminated resulting in less calories absorbed.
The only good thing about white breads - they often have more calcium, especially if they are made with milk.
So, what kind of bread should you choose? Whether it is white bread or wheat bread, find one that is high in fiber, high in calcium (for kids and elderly) and which tastes good. The healthy choice will be a 100% whole wheat bread (remember to check the ingredients) that is fortified with calcium.

Instead of using wheat bread (a little better than white but not a whole lot) over white (which really is just empty calories), start using whole grain breads. You can get 5 grain bread, or 7 grain bread, or even 12 grain bread. Then there is the best of all-black pumpernickel. The more whole grains a bread contains, the more natural nutrients your body will be receiving. It is a fallacy that whole grain breads have LESS calories. The truth is that what calories they DO have are more nutritional, and therefore better for you than those from white bread.

Whole wheat bread has more fiber and nutrtion thans white bread. Also white bread is usually made with bleached flour and that can be bad for you. Your body can actually process whole wheat or whole grain breads better than white bread.

It's by far a better choice! Whole grains aren't processed like the "white" carbs used to make bread, pasta, rice, etc. The fiber in whole grains "pushes" digested food faster through your gastro-intestinal track and therefore you'll be less likely to suffer from constipation, high cholesterol, etc. It may be an acquired taste but when you think of all the benefits, it's worth the effort. A grilled cheese on whole wheat may not soothe you like "Wonderbread" but give it a chance! Also, drink plenty of water.....it helps hydrate your entire body and assists the whole grains (fruits & veggies) to digest and move out of you! Happy health to you! :-)

About 40 percent healthier because it contains many significant vitamins and minerals that are processed out of white bread flour.
