Yellowtail Shiraz:
A wine made for the North American palate.
It has added sugars because North Americans prefer sweet flavors.
It is made from huge over producing grapes that lack structure; therefore tannins are added to balance the wine.
It is oxygenated to produce mature qualities in a cheap young wine.
It is basically a wine that has been created in a laboratory to sell to North Americans. Many Australian wineries, seeing the success of Casella Estate, are following suit.

There are so many other great inexpensive wines that are true expressions of the grape.

What you say may be true -- but the failure of French wines is that they do not appeal to US tastes.

You seem to be criticizing YellowTail for making a wine that the consumer likes. But surely they are not the only winery to make this type of wine?

What about Blossom Hill? Sutter Home White Zinfandel and numerous others?

So new wine drinkers in the USA like wines with high residual sugar? I wonder if that is related to the US policy of not letting adults drink beer or wine until they are 21? If all one is allowed to drink are the incredibly sweet Coca Cola (six spoonfuls of sugar per can) and other colas well into adulthood then no wonder so many people ask on Yahho Answers for a wine that doesn't taste 'sharp' or 'bitter'.

As for oxygenated -- I assume you are talking about micro-oxygenation. This is a technique propounded by the great Michel Rolland and used by many wineries around the world.

You haven't really asked a question. YellowTail are not alone and I don't know why you have picked on them.

I understand you are in the business of selling wine. Surely it is better that people drink YellowTail rather than Coke or (ugh) iced-tea?

I was at a winery In finger Lakes a while ago where they poured me a sweetish red wine. It was a blend of Pinot Noir/Cab Franc/Merlot. They called it a "wine with training wheels" made to encourage new wine drinkers. Most of us start with easy drinking sweet or medium sweet wines.

My first was Blue Nun Liebfraumilch and remember feeling very sophisticated the first time I ordered Mateus Rose in a restaurant. What was the first wine you enjoyed?

Get people off colas and drinking wine first -- then convert them to "wines that are true expressions of the grape." But don;t knock their choices now. There is too much snobbery associated with wine.

All the best to you :)

>>Edit -- Hey I hope I wasn't chastising you. Keep those YellowTail customers coming into your store and one day they'll tire of if and ask you to suggest an alternative. Promise. Trust me :)
