I think that most people do care about trivial and superficial things but I don't necessarily think that they would be considered shallow for doing so. I think what makes a person shallow is being so absorbed with the pettie and mundane without placing much emphasis or giving any attention to things and experiences that can shape them into compassionate and knowledgable individuals.

I think people day to day do get wrapped up in superficial goals and peoples values diminish because of it. But I would venture that as easy as this happens- We all can be brought to a higher moral level, by taking the time to be humble, counting your blessings, looking in the eyes of an innocent child, sitting quietly in the rain-
hopefully most of us do these things and remember this life is not always about them
