Sounds like your dog has allergies. Mine does too. He's a 10 year old Jack Russell Terrier and has had them since he was little. If you bathe him too much it can remove the natural oil from his skin, which can make him even more itchy.
I've tried every vet product known to man and nothing worked. Used steroids for a while, he still itched and gained like 5 pounds (he only weighs 14). So, I stick to Benadryl and Mrs. Allens Shed Stop for older dogs (can get it at Petsmart or Amazon). The shed stop is an oil product that I put on both of my dogs food. Keeps their coats shiny, and skin well hydrated. If he gets a really bad hot spot, I put some hydrocortisone ointment on it and try to calm him down.
At it's worst, he looked like a bald, pink dog. It was bad. But now, he has a full coat and looks totally normal - and doesn't itch.

Steps
Check your pet for fleas, they are the first culprit!
Now wash your pet accordingly. (Treat for fleas if necessary.)
Rinse thoroughly (soap residue causes itching too).
Dilute about a quarter of a bottle of ordinary conditioner (the kind you use) in a gallon of water. (Add a few drops of hot oil if you'd like.) Pour on pet as needed. (IE: For longer hair use more.)
Rinse thoroughly (the same as the shampoo).
Now dilute 1 cup of any anti-bacterial mouthwash (no mint) in a gallon of water and saturate pet thoroughly.
DO NOT RINSE!!!!
Dry pet as usual.
Tips
Try to do this once every ten days to two weeks, a dirty pet is an itchy pet.
This works great for pets with skin problems!
If your dog doesn't have fleas, and your bathe them often, the problem could be allergies, a half a Benadryl works for most dogs, although it can make them a little "loopy". Vet recommended, and doggy approved, well with a nice chunk of hot-dog around the pill-half. No more than one-half every 6 hours, doggy systems don't seem to process antihistamines as fast as humans.
Switch to laundry detergent free of dyes and perfumes (ie- Purex Free & Clear). Your dog's reaction might be to the chemicals in regular detergents used to wash the bedsheets or sofa covers. If you can't find a free & clear formula, look in the section for baby laundry detergent.
Benadryl (or generic diphenhydramine hydrochloride) is safe to give to dogs at a 1 milligram to 1 lb dose ratio. It's safe to give a 25 lbs dog a 25 milligram dose. If its hard to give Fido a pill, hide it in a small dab of peanut butter.
If your dog is itching because of dry, flaky skin the problem may be a food allergy. Many dry dog foods are chicken and corn based. This causes skin problems in many dogs. Try switching them over to a lamb and rice based dry dog food. Do this gradually so as not to cause them digestive discomfort.
Warnings
Don't wash your pet more than once a week because it strips the natural oils from their skin and this also causes itching.

It could be fleas.... get some of that stuff that comes in a small tube and put that on the dog. it could also be mange, there are loads of different reasons for a dog to itch and lose its fur, best bet take it to the vet and have it checked out.

DO NOT use motor oil on your dog. Although it does kill mange, the oil penetrates through the skin and will damage the liver. The dog will eventually die of liver failure.
First , look for fleas.
Second, see if the skin appears dry and cracked.
Just saying skin issues does not tell us anything.

It can be numerous things wrong with these symptoms....anything from flea allergies to thyroid problems. Make an appointment with your vet and get it properly diagnosed. You don't want your dog to suffer with this terrible condition...and it is very treatable!

It could be fleas or something else. I'd suggest taking your dog to your vet and having him checked out.

NOW THIS IS TRUE. MY DOG GOT THE MANGE WHERE HE WAS LOSING HIS FUR AND I WAS TOLD TO RUB USED CAR OIL ON HIS FUR. MAKE SURE IT'S COOLED OFF AND DON'T LET HIM IN THE SUN WHEN IT'S ON HIM. THIS REALLY DOES WORK, I KNOW IT SOUNDS GROSS BUT IF YOU PUT IT ON HIM IT WILL WORK. CALL A VET AND ASK HIM.
