Okay I breast fed my son until he was two years old and I brushed his teeth even when he only had gums but I still failed to conquer the tooth decay...So when he was 2 and1/2 I took him to the dentist to have the twilight sedation and the dentist gave him fillings on three of his front teeth, a month later one of the fillings fell out so I had to take him for another sadation and a month later two fell out...I had initally felt uneasy about having any of this done but now we have moved to another state (Arizona) and I don't know any mother's to ask about credible pediatric dentists because I took him to one office out here and the dentist was incredibly unprofessional and I am at a loss because this is my baby I am talking about here...PLEASE help.

Gosh I know how you feel! I was in your situation awhile ago, when my sons cavities were workable. I got several different opinions and no 2 dentists could agree so I didnt get them fixed- especially after seeing 3 pediaticians that said putting him to sleep or sedating him is a no-no (he was way below the growth curves in negative percentiles and has oral motor problems and alot of delays and no one has been able to figure out his condition yet). Now alot of them are so far gone all we can do is pull the teeth. We get him xrayed periodically to make sure the cavities are staying put and they have for over a year- they never grow upwards towards the nerves or roots or the adult teeth.
I can recommend some products to you: first of cource a flouride treatment you can administer in your home- much cheaper than getting dentist flouride treatments and a low enough concentration can be applied daily.
then "spiffies" like baby wipes for the mouth - they contain xylitol which strengthens the teeth. look up on the internet for this one. if you cant find them email me at pieceoffraud@aol.com - ill give you the address and you can get them via mail.
also see if a dentist will give you "MI paste" it has a reputation for rebuilding new teeth enamel on eroded teeth- i havent used this for very long so i cant guarantee it.
these i admit are difficult to use- the child will squirm and try to lick off the product, making it less effective. you can stick a finger accross the mid-mouth above the tongue and try to keep the finger in while you do the applications- this makes it very hard for them to suck or lick any off.
you may just want to get him periodically xrayed and leave the teeth alone at least for awhile. my dentist admitted to me that when they were fillable, the fillings would likely come out many times and hed have to be put under again and again- not a good idea!also look into capping or sealing them.

Try contacting whatever state agency licenses dentists in Arizona. They probably have a website, which may even list complaints made against the doctor and specialty information. Then just call around. You can tell a lot about a doctor by how his staff treats people on the phone.

Are you supplementing your child with fluoride drops? If you are having him drink filtered or bottled water, the lack of fluoride may be the origin of the tooth decay. At any rate, stop feeling guilty, because you are in no way responsible for his tooth decay. That would be akin to me being responsible for my child's asthma. I have done all I can do to prevent it, but it happened anyway. That's is just the way the genetic code goes.

Well you know you just have to find a doctor you really feel good about. Don't limit yourself to "pediatric" dentists. There are many regular dentists who deal with this well. Call the offices and flat out ask the receptionist about your particular situation. Their reaction will help you determine if this doctor is for you. Another lead is you pediatrician, they can often recommend somebody good. Your old dentist may also be able to recommend somebody in your area.

If the fillings keep falling out why bother refilling? They can put on a nice seal and just wait for these baby teeth to fall out

I have never heard of a 2 year old being sedated or having fillings. You should talk with your son's pediatrician about what you should do. I believe in giving kids losts of water and avoiding fruit juice which is what I did from birth. My kids never had a cavity unil they were over 7 years old.
