Really depends what you are using it for.
I use mine for school, papers, music, DVDS when I go on vacation. This computer I have has wireless internet, alot of memory, any program a student would want.
I think you should check out Toshiba. I have a Toshiba Satellite. It is about 1000.00 with rebates and incentives.

best for what purpose?

panasonic if you need a ruggedised laptop (only the Toughbook ones not the normal panasonic) they are virtually indestrucatable

small screen for power saving
large screen to replace desktop workstations

As a general rule I'd say for laptops it pays to go with a major branded PC (eg DELL / Toshiba / IBM etc.) I wouldn't rule out LG

wasting money on expensive toys but bonus points from fashion victims: Macs / Sony's

Dell laptops are great and if you buy a warranty, the customer service is tolerable (albeit you might need to only do online chats with them since they're not Americans and their English is a little messed up). But the computers themselves are probably the best and have the least amount of problems.

Toshiba Satellite. They're affordable, have all the bells and whistles you could ever need, and they're so solid that I've dropped mine multiple times without a scratch or problem with it running. Mine is 4 years old now and the technology still isn't close to being out of date which is amazing for computers.

I would recommend a Sony Vaio - I use one all day, every day, for work, and it's never let me down. (touch wood!) The spec and display is great, shop around and you may get a bargain!
