My fiancé is coming home in a couple of weeks from Iraq, but when is enlistment date comes up in a few months he said that he will not re-enlist because he enrolled at 18 and is now 26, but has already been sent off 3 times in the past 6 years. I want him to re-enlist, but he said that we are going to war with Iran and if he re-enlist he feels for certain that he will be sent off for a 4th time and does not want to do that since we plan on getting married. So again my question is how many times can one soldier get sent off, and will the let you have a break before they send you off again?

I also don't think their is a limit unless they have a medical reason or something. Your fiance could very well be right about Iran, time will tell. He has been a very brave man already and i think he is right in his decision not to re-enlist again, he has served us all very well already as have many other brave soldiers. I hope he wont have to go back, but i hear Bush is in the process of calling back soldiers that have been out of active duty for as much as 10 years now without giving them the choice,..what they call a backdoor draft. I find this very disturbing!! Good luck with the future,..and tell your fiance i said thanks for everything.

There is no limit; If you arrive at a unit that is about to go, that unit is probably on a rotation that will deply them every other year. So, in your three year tour, you could do 2 in Iraq. Then when you go to your next unit, you could repeat the process all over again. The Army has started a program that tracks how long a Soldier has been in a combat zone called Dwell Time. This time is tracked in the Soldier's records. It doesn't mean less time over here, it just means spreading the wealth for those who have not. Bottom line: if you are in the military now, you will go over at some point; if you join, you'll be with us shortly.

There is no limit on Active Duty soldiers. They are warriors 24/7 365. And they do whatever they need to do. However, the military does try to spread the responsibility when they can. I've got 24 years of service and have deployed 12 times for a year each time

There's no limit to the number of times he can be sent off. We're not going to war with Iran, but there's a godd chance he'll get sent to Iraq again. Expect him to be home for 18 months and gone for a year on average as long as we maintain these troop levels in Iraq.

there is no limit. my husband is in the sandbox for his 4th time now. the army makes you take 2-3 weeks r&r usually in the middle of your year long deployment and they try not to send you again for at least 6 months, but there is nothing for sure there either so far as i know. the navy is far better prepared and they do 6 months every 3-4 years (except in time of war... then it's a little more often). as for not resignins - the army is all about stop-loss right now, good luck with them letting him go if he is army. navy and air force will tell him "don't let the door hit you on the way out."

Be glad that this is not like World War II, where no one got a break from deployment except for brief periods of R & R. For the most part, they were in for the duration.

As long as he is in the service, he can be deployed. It's that simple. The military does allow them time to rest and regroup, but I know of a Marine battalion that is going back for its fourth time, and the conflict has only been going on for three years.

A soldier can volunteer as often as they like. The answer lies in the soldiers military contract. They can only be placed on active duty for 24 months per enlistment unless the contract states otherwise.

They can be sent off as many times as the military wants to send them, as far as I know.
Usually soldiers are supposed to have a year to train and "relax" before deploying again.

And by the way, tell your man thank you for his service.
Military wife, here!

I don't think it makes a difference between the various branches.
