She's an 8-year-old spayed female and she tends to do it in my bedroom. I'm away at university for most of the year. We have provided a litter box (a selection of litterboxes, in fact) and we have no dogs. We have one other cat, also an 8-year-old spayed female. My cat has had hormone problems in the past. What's going on? I'm either going to have to replace my cat or my carpets at this rate.

she might have a bladder infection. or her hormones have been thrown off again and she feels she must mark her territory b/c of the other cat. either way, see your vet.

if not, try spraying some bitter apple spray on the carpet - they usually sell some at pet stores to keep your pets out of things you dont want them to get into.

you can also try seeing an animal behaviorist or trainer - your vet might have #'s for some in your area.

She could be angry with you for being away. Or she could be in pain while going to the bathroom. Although, that depends on how long this has been going on since she's doing it mainly in your bedroom. And since it's mainly in your bedroom, I can't help but think it's something personal.

You're going to have to get rid of the smell where she's been going to the bathroom. Remember that pee can get down far and cats have an exceptional sense of smell, so pulling the carpet back and cleaning way down may be necessary. If she's going in a particular corner, put something there so she can't anymore.

I'd recommend a cat book....I really like Cats for Dummies. There's a lot of information in it about unwanted behaviors and how to remedy them.

Good luck!

My female cat has had this problem since we obtained another female cat. She may not like sharing a litter pan or it is not clean enough. My cat is very finicky. If it is not cleaned to her standards she will go outside of it. Try cleaning it more or try a new litter. You can also put the litter pan in the bedroom where she is going. Vets can give you good ideas on solving this problem too.
