Hi to all the experienced moms and dads out there! My daughter is 4 years old and MAY have have early signs of chicken pox. Have to wait and see if more red spots appear. She feels fine so far. She goes to day care and I know it's very possible for kids to get contagious infections in daycare and schools. Any suggestions on how I can help ease any discomfort she might get or just something in general that would may things go easier...thanks! I also have a 13 month old child. Is this too young for him to get it?

We do NOT live in the UNITED States so therefore we do not get the same vaccinations as 'ya'll' do! Unfortunately, Americans seem to take for granted that everyone on here lives in America. I am American, but live in Europe.

Three of my four children got the vaccine and two ended up with chicken pox anyway! Generally, oatmeal is recommended for itchy chicken pox. Rather than buying expensive oatmeal bath packets just take some instant or quick oatmeal put it in a nylon stocking or other very thing sock and tie it closed. Use this as a sponge in a warm bath. I also gave my children tylenol and ibuprofen to sooth the itchiness at night. Calamine, Benadryl, or Caladryl(mix of the former two) are also nice salves for itchy skin.

The 13 month old can get the chicken pox but generally it will be a very light case that may not end up causing "immunity" to getting it again. I personally got it at that age but it was pretty severe so I am immune now.

Make sure to keep everybodies nails clipped and filed down to dullness. Infection of the sores can cause scarring. I would also recommend using some sanitizer on their hands (regularly) to help prevent infection.

Good Luck!

Oatmeals baths, calamine lotion, and disctraction helped when my kids had them years ago.

Spend time distracting your daughter from the itch and discomfort. Get down on the floor and play with her, read to her, color with her... anything to take her mind off of what's going on with her. It may help ease what she's feeling if she focuses on something else.

I don't know if you can pick up Aveen products where you are, but they make an oatmeal bath, which really helped my kids. (I posted a couple of Aveeno links below, but in case you can't get those products or would rather go the more natural route, I posted a link to a homemade oatmeal bath).

I would keep her out if daycare for a couple of days, just to see how she is. I know it may be difficult to do, but if it were me, I wouldn't want the other kids in the daycare to catch it and it's contagious even before the rash shows up. As for your 13 month old...he can catch it, too. My sister had chicken pox before she was a year old. She hasn't caught it again (there is a possibility of them catching it again if they get it when they're too young).

Good luck! I hope it turns out that your little ones don't have the chicken pox!

First off, it is never too early for a child to catch chicken pox so I would keep the 13 month old away from your daughter until she is well again. To keep her comfortable, always remind her to never scratch. Scratching makes it worse and also it could leave scars where the chicken pox were. To help the itchiness, try an oatmeal bath. Also calamine lotion (the pink stuff) or another anti-itch cream could relieve the itch as well. Good luck and I hope she feels better :(

A bath of oatmeal is considered a natural remedy for relieving the itch due to chicken pox. This bath is prepared by cooking two cups of oatmeal in two liters of water for fifteen minutes. This mixture is then put into a cloth bag, preferably cotton, and a string is tied tightly around the top. This bag is allowed to float in a tub of warm water, and swished around until the water becomes turbid. Precaution should be taken to ensure that the bag is not torn. The child with chicken pox can splash and play in the water, making sure that water goes over all the scalds, while the pouch of oatmeal can remain in the tub.
