It is a fairly good determination of health and which genes are worthy to be passed on.
My question though: Why does it matter what is important to some people and what is important to others. If someone cares about physical beauty, then great. If someone cares about mental beauty, then great. If someone cares about the beauty of your soul, then great.
It's just what is important to them.

Because you can't see one's personality when you first meet them. You have nothing else to go on except for the shell they have.
A person who isn't very shallow will get to know a person who they don't find outwardly attractive but usually not unless they are in small proximity to that person (work, common friends, etc).
There are hundreds of other reasons, visual mating cues that go back as far as the beginning of man. However, mostly it's because what is presented to us. I will tell you this though, good grooming goes a long way to making a person more attractive. No matter what you look like, if you are well groomed it will make people look twice at you.

As I have gotten older physical appearance has started to count less. But a beautiful girl still makes my head turn.

That's a tough one to answer. Honestly for me I prefer a healthy young female who's better looking inside then out. But she has to be healthy outside too. Not too thin, not too much the other extreme just right and just her in the middle. Looks are just that looks. Who said size matters on the u know what's any who? I never said that. Guys and girls come in all shapes and sizes and we're all beautiful creatures in God's sight. I wish we could see things like He does and stop being so picky on looks.

Because people see the physical attributes before they get to know the individuals personality.

Physical appearance stands out first because either good or gross. Than theres other things to be considered (how rich, how neat, responsible, and etc).

This is natural for men and women. Pretty woman make the llady attractive so the man want her more (for sex), so thy have good gene. Woman like strong man (old myth), because he provide protection. Now, women want rich person (ugly but cute) to provide security (finance). Again, do not believe everything I say.

i dont know!!! people are just soooo shallow these days!!!
i dont look at physical apperance but right now...i like this guy and all of the girls on my sister's drill team are all like you have no taste but i dont look at that and they dont understand that i want a sweet caring guy wh knows how to treat a guy, and yeah i know some cute guys can do that, but i dont really care!!!
