But bear in mind that the "ransom" theology of the Atonement (Pauline--Augustinian--Anslemian) is only one of the going explanations. Read "Atonement" by Gustaf Aulen for a broader picture of how people have thought about the Atonement.

But you're right; the whole Anselmian thing is a heap of crap and paints God as a vicious, sadistic barbarian.

The ranson was himself, because we have been kidnapped by sin. We have been taken away by sin, thus God wants us back that he was, is, willing to get us back. He died because that is what the kidnapper wanted. So he died for us that we may be reconciled to him (our original father).
