Glucosamine helps but I don't believe it can begin to control the pain a dog's in with arthritis. Two of my greyhounds have the beginnings of problems and the vet said they could get 1500 mg per day - they weigh right around 70 lbs. However, they're on it as a preventative, not a pain reliever, because they only occasionally limp if they're not on it.

My bearded collie who had arthritis was on Rimadyl which worked amazingly well - he could play like a puppy again, but it can have some horrible side effects (it didn't with him, but it can). You should get your vet to prescribe something for your lab because the dog's only 4 and can't live in pain for the rest of it's life.

You should really go to the vet for some real pain medicine. They usually prescribe an anti-inflammatory type medicine for dogs with arthritis to reduce the inflammation of the joints. My dog took it for years.
