in the cat world butt sniffing is the equaivalnt of shaking hands to you and me. cats wont remember each other as much by sight as by smell. its their way of saying HI how ya doin.

At least cats have enough sense to not sniff my butt. Can't say the same for my dog.

It's like a way of saying hello to each other. Also male cats use it as an invite to go steady with another female feline.Even though it looks like cats are sniffing each others butt they are really sniffing a female cats' |||||||||| kitten maker***** which is close to their butt. You see a male cat can tell when a female is going into heat and is ready to mate.

As has already been stated, it's a matter of greeting and territory. It was hilarious watching Blaze try to sniff Lotus' butt every 5 minutes after we brought her home. She didn't much care for it, either....he kept getting a hiss, and a swift smack in the face. I kept picturing her screaming "MASHER!" Hehehe.

Its a territory thing! They want to know where they have been and what they have been into, the smell of a butt can tell a cat alot!

Butt-sniffing for animals is how they tell who is who. We rely on our sight for the most part to tell us who is who, but cats and dogs rely on scent.
