You should call 911 immediately!!!

Then if the patient has Nitro Tabs/paste/spray have them use it.

Next give the Patient 1 325mg Aspirin or 4 81mg Baby Aspirins. If the patient is alert and able to swallow.

(By the way...ACLS Providers are taught the Acronym MONA when it comes to treating an MI...MONA standing for Morphine, Oxygen, Nitro, and ASPIRIN. and Aspirin is not only use to PREVENT a CVA post CVA or MI, but to Treat an MI)

Have all information ready for the EMS crews, such as Name, Address, DOB, SS#, Next of kin, Meds, Allergies, Past Medical History, and Family Doctors name / Number.

Be prepared to perform CPR if trained, if not stay on the line with 911 because most 911 dispatchers are trained as EMD's (Emergency Medical Dispatchers) and can walk you through the steps.

MI's are very serious, and in all cases should be treated in a hospital. The patient may need thrombolitics, Cardiac Stents, or even By-pass surgery. All off which have to be done at a Cardiac Center.

Hope this helps, and good luck!!!

Shortness of breath, pallor, profuse sweating, severe, crushing pain in th heart region with pain extending to neck and in to arms ,especially the left arm ,sometmes nausea etc are the symptoms of myocardial infarction .If you suspect this conditon do not delay to call an ambulance. You can give an aspirin tablet if possible ,it will prevent further clotting .In some cases chest pain may be absent(silent infarction But the other symptoms such as breathlessness, sweating, pale and cold skin may be present.Diabetics and high blood pressure patients and risk groups.

Of course you have to call emergency or take the patient to ER, and have all posible information available (blood group, previous exams, ECG etc).
At home while waiting, as THE FIRST to do is make sure pulse and breathing are present, if the patient is conscious and you don't feel pulse, make him/her COUGH ONCE, VERY HARD and feel if there is a pulse response. If so, make him/her cough every 2-3 seconds and see if heart rate begins, or it has to go on with the coughing. This self-heart-massage has saved many lives in the first minutes of a heart failure. This can go on for several minutes until medical help is available.

Call 911. Give O2 if available as well as nitro if the person is prescribed it. Give two 81 mg asprin (if not allergic) and get them transported to a hospital ASAP. An MI means time is muscle tissue not getting enough oxygen.

Call 911.

If they are unconcious....

Check for breathing: look @ the chest to see if it rises & falls, listen to see if you can hear them breathe, put your cheek close to the mouth to see if you feel breath.

Next, check the carotid pulse (on the side of the neck). Start CPR if no breathing or pulse.
If you feel a pulse but no breathing perform rescue breathing only, no chest compressions. Continue until the ambulance arrives unless they start to breathe on their own or you feel a pulse.

If they are concious:

If the face is pale, raise the tail (elevate the feet).
If the face is red, raise the head.
Give them an aspirin if they can swallow.
Keep them still and quiet until the ambulance arrives.

1) Call 911.
2) Take an aspirin.
3) Make sure your vital information is available (next of kin, blood type, etc.) on a piece of paper.
4) Get as close to the front door as possible so the ambulance personnel don't have to cart you down a set of stairs.

Intravenous nitroglycerin or other medicines are given for pain and to reduce the oxygen requirements of the heart. Morphine and similar medicines are potent pain killers that may also be given for a heart attack
