I hate to burst all your bubbles PPL, the most warlike country of the 20th C is mine, the UK. Since the end of WW2 we have only had one year (1968) when British troops were not in one conflict or another. As to declaring war, that is not the point, people die just the same whether you declare war or not.

Dave S. is right. The US has actually never declared war on a country that wasn't already at war. The US has joined into wars that were already in progress. The big deal in the US about the beginning of the war in Iraq was that it was the first time that the US had declared war on a country without being struck first (and by that I'm not talking about 9/11 since there was no link when Bush began the war). Congress is the body to declare war, not the President. He asked them for permission to fund a defense and used it in an offensive move, claiming that by giving him money that the Congress had implied permission, which they hadn't given.
If you have examples of other wars that the US has declared in the last century, please share those since I've never heard of them.

In the last century, the US government actually adopted an isolationist policy, in other words, they did NOT want to get involved in wars unless they had to. In World War II, Japan attacked the United States first in a surprise attack at Pearl Harbor after which, Japan's ally, Nazi Germany, declared war on the United States. This forced the United States to enter World War II, after which, they became a superpower along with Soviet Russia and they had to become more pro-active in world affairs because of the Communist threat, the arms race and the Cold War in general. The CIA was formed and America began to come out of its shell and get involved with other countries.
It is only since 9/11 that America has started "pre-emptive" attacks on countries that might be harbouring terrorists or considering a nuclear attack on the US or its allies (Iraq although the WMDS didn't exist, Iran and North Korea).

This is just a false statement. Actual declarations of war are pretty rare. We've only done it four times in the Twentieth Century, against Germany in 1917, Japan, German, and Italy in December 1941. Germany alone has declared war on a dozen countries or more between WWI and WWII.

Many serious wars in our recent history were not started by the USA. But I'm sure there are MANY MANY people thankful that the USA got involved. Otherwise we'd all be speaking German now. I believe the USA is convinced its freedom-oriented governing process is the best for human rights and quality of life, and when extremes go the other way, with dictatorships, totalitarianism, and complete disregard for the well being of the pupulation, the USA sticks its police-nose in to ensure that people aren't being killed en masse for no reason. Your statement makes it sound like the USA is a war mongering machine that seeks conflict. I don't believe that is the case.

Do not be daft. Your ignorance is showing!!
America stay out of world war II until it was attacked and forced into it. War was never declared in Vietnam so it was not a war and the US was giving aid to it's legitimate government.
Germany, Japan, and many other smaller countries have declared far more wars.
Perhaps you should list all the wars you think the US has declared so that everyone can have a good laugh!!!!

Um, it has been involved in lots of conflicts but most were police actions, such as the Korean War. It is quite a miltary state and has slightly Impieralistic views. They seem to think ( the government, NOT the people in general) that America is the best, so therefore want to Americanise the world. Oh, and they're Islamophobic and scared of socialism.

The USA has declared war after being attacked and that has been 2 times. WWI and WWII. I don't know what country you are from but I would suggest that you read the History of warfare or World History.

No it hasn't. Nazi Germany declared war on more countries. Like Poland, Ukraine, France, England, Spain etc. The US has only declared war on a couple. Afganistan, Iraq. The others like Vietnam, and Korea, were conflicts and police actions.

The others are quite correct. The U.S. only declares war with those who are already engaged in such.
World War I was already in progress when we joined, and only after a US passenger liner was sunk by a German submarine. Further, Berlin tried to get Mexico to join them by attacking us. Then three of our merchant ships were sunk by the Germans. That was the catalyst that brought us into the war. It was Austria-Hungary, the German Empire, and the Ottoman Empire, who had declared war on France, the Russian Empire, the United Kingdom, and the Kingdom of Italy.
Of course, World War II was well involved in Europe before we ever thought of joining. We did send lend-lease vehicles and planes to the UK. Those already involved by the time we came aboard were Poland, France, Czechoslavakia, the Soviet Union, North Africa, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Yugoslavia and Greece. We didn't get involved officially until Japan attacked us at Pearl Harbor, and then declared war on us. Hitler then declared war in us in solidarity with the Japanese.
Korea was a war initiated by the North, and supported by Russia and China. Our involvement was through the United Nations, and our mandate was through them, not an individual declaration of war.
Viet Nam was actually a proxy war, fought between the North and South. The U.S. went in to train and advise the South until we started taking casualties, then we went in and "advised" on steroids.
Grenada was not a war per se, as our mission was to support the legitimate government, and kick the Cubans out, and to rescue our citizens who were there.
Our "war" with Panama in 1989 was an attempt to capture Manuel Noriega, who as Panama's leader, was trafficking drugs into the U.S. Once that was done, the conflict ended.
Gulf War I was only initiated after Iraq invaded the sovereign nation of Kuwait. It was through a coalition of various other nations. The sole purpose was to stop Saddam Hussein from annexing Kuwait as his 19th province.
Somalia wasn't even a "war." We were supporting the UN with famine relief supplies when we were attacked by "warlords."
Bosnia/Kosovo was a joint NATO/US operation, and primarily an air campaign to prevent genocide in the regional conflict.
Gulf War II is on-going, and was authorized not only by UN resultions, but congressional approval. While many dispute the reasons for going in, the region now has one less madman running a nation, threatening its neighbors.
Now, looking at this list, please tell me how it is that the US has declared war on the most countries?
