bipolar disorder is a mental disorder characterised by fluctuations in a person affect from mania (extremely happy) to depressed (extremely sad). Mania is just as dangerous as depression as manic people believe that they can do anything.

If you see these characteristics in a person then they may suffer from bipolar but would have to be diagnosed by a professional

Bipolar disorder differs significantly from clinical depression, although the symptoms for the depressive phase of the illness are similar. Most people who have bipolar disorder talk about experiencing "highs" and "lows" – the highs are periods of mania, the lows periods of depression. The severity of the mood swings and the way they disrupt normal life activities distinguish bipolar mood episodes from ordinary mood changes.

Increased physical and mental activity and energy

Heightened mood, exaggerated optimism and self-confidence

Excessive irritability, aggressive behavior

Decreased need for sleep without experiencing fatigue

Grandiose delusions, inflated sense of self-importance

Racing speech, racing thoughts, flight of ideas

Impulsiveness, poor judgment, distractibility

In the most severe cases, delusions and hallucinations

Symptoms of depression - the "lows" of bipolar disorder

Prolonged sadness or unexplained crying spells

Significant changes in appetite and sleep patterns

Irritability, anger, worry, agitation, anxiety

Pessimism, indifference

Loss of energy, persistent lethargy

Feelings of guilt, worthlessness

Inability to concentrate, indecisiveness

Inability to take pleasure in former interests, social withdrawal

Yea, I know many people that have it.

People that can be really happy and all of a sudden be really depressed are people with bipolar disorder.

You can be with them having the best time of your life and all of a sudden they'll start crying and feeling depressed out of nowhere. You never know what their state of emotion they could be in. It could be a hassle if your partner has it because you have to be understanding.
