speaking in toungues is something that occurs if God's word is being spoken say in English and an Arabic man is present with no translator, he will hear the message in his own language while everyone else hears it in the English it is spoken in. The Holy Spirit will never distract people from the message so if someone is droning on in gibberish, they are seeking to bring attention to themselves and it is NOT of God.

I believe That the correct interpritation of what we have in The Bible is that speaking in tongues refers to speaking in languages one dose not usualy have knowledge of. But recognizable languages understood by others who do normaly speak in them. This is from the acount of the Apostles being given languages known to all who were present on the Day of Pentacost when The Church was instituted by God through The Holy Spirit.

It is also in God's word that no one is to use the gift of tongues unless there is another present to interpret. No one is to just go off and start babbling some giberish that is not known to any mortal. If the speaking is genuine, then there will be someone to interpret and it will be a language that, if it is recorded, will be known to others who speak it...

I do not have the verses handy but they can be verified to back up this pov.

Ok, I am Pentecostal, and Speak in Tounges I have a lot on the Subject, here it is.

Act 2:1 ¶ And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

Act 2:2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

Act 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

1Cr 14:1 ¶ Follow after charity, and desire spiritual [gifts], but rather that ye may prophesy.

1Cr 14:2 For he that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth [him]; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

1Cr 14:3 But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men [to] edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

1Cr 14:4 He that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

1Cr 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater [is] he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

1Cr 14:6 ¶ Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

Two American researchers have long ago established that the tongue speaking in Pentecostal convention is due to a temporary mental derangement called Glossalalia!

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

"and they were filled whith the holy spirit and began to speak in other languages (or tuonges)as the spirt kept giving them clear and loud expression"acts chapter 2 v4n the speach that follows after does some more explaining. it is a language that holy spirit speeks through you and one of the gifts of the spirit.
