Midtown starts at 34th Street. Below that is downtown. But Lower Manhattan is as far downtown as you can go and probably starts below Canal Street.

There are a lot of district names that people say. Downtown usually refers more to a direction.

Midtown is the area between 34th Street & 59th Street. Anything below 34th St would be considered "Downtown" (of course there are many neighborhoods that comprise that area). Anything above 59th St. would be Uptown--although the term Uptown is usually more synonomous with Harlem (areas above 96th Street).

downtown is generally considered anything below 14th st.
midtown is area around 34th st to 59th
uptown is above 59th st.

the area from 14th to 34th can be downtown, or midtown depending on who you ask, there is no hard and fast rule on this.

realistically, one would say i live in chelsea, or i live in the east village, or i live in midtown on the east side, or downtown near the village. or something like that.
