I have suffered from anxiety/panic attackes for over 15 years on and off. Will I ever get over them totally. I live in fear of fear itself. The fear of having another attack.

Yes, it is completely possible and happens every day. Whilst there are no guarantees, if you can find a therapist who you get on well with who uses CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) then you're off to a very good start. You can ask your GP to refer you to see one but the waiting list is often a very long time (years), so perhaps the best bet is to see one privately if you can afford it. Anyone with formal CBT training will be able to help you with panic attacks and anxiety in general. A good starting point would be the BABCP - British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists - on www.babcp.org.uk and go to 'find a therapist'.

Are you on medication? I found that once I stopped taking Citalopram my panic attacks almost totally went away. Stopped the medication 5 months ago, and have had 2 small attacks in that time, compared with at least 1 a day before. If you are concerned about medication, talk to your doctor, sometimes they just keep prescribing pills and upping the doses, when in fact that is making things worse. Good luck - this too will pass

Discovering the SOURCE of a panic attack might help. A therapist can help, or a doctor. Deep breathing can help, too.
Fear can best be handled by facing it dead on: what do you fear?
If it is entirely irrational and you cannot explain it (known as "free floating anxiety") you need psychiatric help. If you can identify the fear, chances are good that it will then disappear just by naming it, or facing it.
Good Luck, and don't be too proud or feel too ashamed to seek help. There may be a very simple solution.

Hi mate. Had my first panic attack at the age of about 20 and was still having them at the age of 40! However, with time I found that I was handling them better and these days they don't cause me nearly as many problems as when I was younger.

what you've been experiencing is very common for patients with anxiety/panic. i'm sorry to tell you this but most patients never get over it completely. the key to having a better life is learning to control it. most docs will give you pills, but that's just a quick fix. learning to control it thru "cognivitive behavior therapy" (or counseling - basically they teach you to recognize your symptoms, then say to yourself "i'm having an attack, but that's ok. i can control it and i don't have to feel this way nor live in fear." and then use an exercise to control it), breathing exercises (like yoga) and especially stress management are key to having a better quality of life. your attacks will never completely go away but you can gain control over them. it won't be easy, it will take work, but it IS effective.

I used to have crippling panic attacks. I probably get a couple a year now since I had my children. Keep a brown paper bag with you at all times and one under the pillow, it helps.

It never goes away. If you smoke weed stop, you drink stop and if you drink caffenine stop. I know you feel like you have to give up on everything, but if you get rid of each one-one by one you might find out what is causing you to panic more. Stress will do it to. I wish you all the luck, it is a VERY hard thing to deal with.
