The forrest of borneo is being cut down to make way for production of palm oil, which is in most the foods we eat (look on the ingredients lables next time in tesco). Does anyone think we should show willing toward whats right and boycott anything with palm oil in? Most palm oil is produced from such areas as borneo, where the cutting down of trees is destroying hundreds of species of plants/trees as well as wildlife and endangering orangitangs.
Oil from these regions is also used in hydrenated fat which is in most mass produced foods this fat is also bad for us so why do we buy it?
Lets not destroy the environments of this great world and our own health, pleese anyone reading this stop buying products with palm oil in and hydrenated fats. It Kills!

People have mentioned meat consumption causing the same problems here, it doesnt have to be if meat is sourced from the right place, ie not mcdonbalds, infact if we all tryed getting localy grown food our health would be better for it. Theres no need for destroying these environments apart from mass prdoucers making huge profits, which we people can stop by being sensible about out lifestyle and what we choose to buy and eat. It's not as hard as some think, in fact its easy and will do most people more good.

If you were a citizen of Borneo, and you had a choice of looking at your property full of forest or a property full of income producing palm trees, which do you think would be better for you?
As far as going veggie, do you have any idea how many bunnies are destroyed annually by planting and harvesting veggie and soy crops?

I agree but there is only a small minority of us humans that really give a damn about this kind of thing - the phrase out of sight out of mind springs to mind. More importantly, it should be the big players like Tesco and other major supermarket chains that try and do something about it like stop using this type of oil in the products they sell.
You asked why people buy it? Why do people smoke/drink? Also, most people are maybe not even aware of the destruction your describing and don't know what palm oil really is or where it comes from.
As others have stated, it's all very well for us to complain about the forests being destroyed because we do not earn our living from these plantations. If it's a case of having money to feed and clothe yourself and your family or having to struggle to provide but having a nice big forest to live in I think we all would pretty much opt for the money. it's sad but in this day and age money is everything and you just cannot live without it...

Most of the palm oil grown in third world countries is being used as livestock food - a fact that actually compounds the problem. Those countries don't have the sanitary processing facilities to convert the palm fruit into human grade oil.

This is a more complex problem, Vegetarianism is unsound because Soya is grown in regions of destroyed rainforest such as Brazil. McDonalads does similar things when importing beef from South America.
South East Asia is under threat from Palm Oil plantations, but it also provides fossil free bio-fuel as well as work for third world countries

I heard on a documentary that the rainforests were being cut down to raise cows for beef for the Japanese and American markets. After reading your info I suspect that the problem is not related to one thing alone but multiple factors. Few problems have a single cause or single fix.
My family is already vegetarian and now guess we'll have to go palm oil free too! :)

You'll find no arguments here, bud.
Palm oil, cheap beef and the soya beans that Red P mentions are not consumed by vegetarians - they are for 'grits' in cattle feed - and KFC's crispy coating (which vegetarians wouldn't touch - for obvious reasons!).
What a way to kill ourselves.

and whilst you are at it you might as well boycott Soya, and anything fed with soya as parts of the Brazilian Rainforest have been cut down for Soya production
mind you it'll be a bit of a beggar trying to spot which Soya / Palm Oil ?Beef or whatever was gron of land not in rain forests. Unless of course your plan is to hurt all forms of agriculture irresepctive if they have been actaully involved or implicated in cuttign down rain forests
By the way are you proposing to move out of your home? As that almost certainly is on land that once was forest, and cut down by mankind yeas ago.

Boycott Mcdonalds and every other fast food place in the world then.
They are the prime problems with this issue not only do they do it for the palm oil but the beef as well.

Eating meat pretty much destroys the earth too.. the more people eat meat, the more land we need to use to raise farm animals.
