Let's look back. In 1858 cars and airplanes were not invented. The gasoline internal combustion engine was not invented, but the steam driven piston had been around since the 1700's. Vehicles driven by steam were around then but not in such wide use as you see today. Trains and ships were driven by steam. Sailing wind driven ships were numerous. The horse was then the major small vehicle power source. The earliest buses were stage coaches between rural areas. In developed cities tracks were laid down for horse drawn trolley cars. For cross country travel trains were used between major citys. For local travel between home and town people of wealth used the horse and buggy, the farmer used horse and wagon, and most common folks of the country had at least a horse. Common folks walked very much.
Travel between continents were made by sea on large vessels and ships. Many people also traveled over waterways on steam driven paddle wheels and various boats. Channels were built in many areas for transport of people and goods to the city on barges which were drawn by mules.

The answer will vary somewhat depending on what part of the world you mean. For maritime travel there were probably still a great many commerical ships under sail but steam propelled ships were undoubtedly already important. Travel by horseback and horse propelled transportation were dominent on land, at least in the United States but train travel had begun in the 1830's. Of course the transportation available to everyone and still in use today was walking.

Mostly it was on horseback or in horse drawn wagon. Railroads were just starting out, there was some barge traffic on lakes, rivers, and canals.
