I believe in prayer. But not in a deity. If that seems confusing, let me explain I am a buddhist. In my philosophy there is no seperate god. The spirit is indwelling, life and essence itself, and it is within all living beings. So to me prayer is communing with that spirit... it is a matter of stilling the outer noise and static and tuning into the kernel of pure consciousness at the center of my being. I don't do it looking for favors or relief from the physical world: I do it to find calmness in a frantic world.
As for the famous commandments: well some of them, like the very first, demands that I believe in something I cannot and do not. Some of the other commandments seem reasonable enough. But it's odd, I don't need to be commanded to know that killing or stealing are not good. I already know that, because I do not want to be killed, I do not want anyone to steal from me... so it follows as the day the night that I want to set that example with my own right behaviour.
To be really honest, I do not understand people who have to be told those things to know it is the right way to live. However I respect others' rights to believe as they must. What I have works for me; I hope what they have works for them.
The important thing is for the individual to find peace and promote peace and constructive behaviour in society, in my opinion.

I believe in prayer but not in the commandments. I don't believe i living by a certain set of rules will keep your soul out of hell. I believe in being a good person and helping others can do that.

Prayer? Imaginative people.
Ten Commandments? They are just a list of morals. Imaginative people may believe they are commandments.

I believe in prayer.
The 10 Commandments - well, that's something different. Technically, we are no longer bound to the 10 Commandments because we are no longer bound to Mosaic Law. They are wonderful guidelines on how to live a moral life. Jesus gave but 2 commandments which we are to follow. "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.' "This is the great and foremost commandment. "The second is like it, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' "

I believe that God gave us the Ten Commandments to show us that we are sinners in need of a savior.
I also believe that God will hear anyone who says the prayer "God, be merciful to me, a sinner."

"Believe" in prayer? This sounds like you are expect to receive something from your prayers. I "believe" we should thank God for His gifts and ask for His guidance in making choices.
Ask NOT what God can do for you; ask what YOU can do for God.
