I'm not one of those people. I'm a Christian, but I also possess the power of critical thinking. I recognize the difference between fiction and reality (I have to teach the difference to my students, so I have to be on top of my game regarding it, lol). I can also pick out important themes from literature like friendship, loyalty, and love. If anything, I think the HP series does a good job of showing the pull both good and evil can have on a person. The characters aren't simply one or the other- they're a bit more dynamic than that, just like people are in real life. The problem some Christians have with the stories is that they think it glorifies witches and wizards, which are clearly not of God. A great Christian parent will teach their children that being a wizard or witch in reality isn't acceptable, but reading a book about children whose decisions affect the world around them is okay. People are afraid of what they don't understand. If they chill out for a minute and actually get a grip on what's being presented, they'll recognize the intrinsic value of the stories. Plus Ron is cool.

Some Christians do hate Harry Potter and apparently the Pope has recently denounced him as Satanic. Can you believe that? Some people are so stupid. I think it is completely ridiculous that these fools that admit that they haven't actually read the books, insist that they promote witchcraft and should be banned. As someone who has read the series, I can tell you that they are full of positive messages. They emphasize the importance of family, the value of friendship, and encourage honesty, integrity, hard-work, loyalty, and perseverance. They deal with the issues of bullying, racism, classism, and slavery -- which are all real world issues. And, you're right, it is a work of fiction that has encouraged reading world wide.

Those Christians who are EDUCATED in literature actually love it. The ones who oppose it follow rumors without actually studying the books. They do not understand what "witchcraft" really is, and they do not recognize symbolism when they see it.
Here is an example of an educated Christian response to Harry Potter:
http://www.digital-disciple.com/harry_potter_granger.htm
"The Christian Meaning: The Harry Potter books do not offer a generic 'good over evil' message. Ms. Rowling writes the powerful, spiritual answer in story form to mankind's larger questions in the only language even a post Christian culture can understand: she writes in the symbols and doctrines of the Christian faith. Harry Potter fans enjoy a resurrection experience in every book and are awashin word pictures and images of Christ and souls in pursuit of perfection in Him. Without this specific meaning, Rowling could not have achieved her unprecedented popularity in a culture that only knows of God in these forms."

I'm sure many do.
There was no negative association w/ 'witchcraft' in Christian ulture untill England was being conquored. The Druids were naturalists & were vilified in order to turn the people away from "the Old Ways" & to the new religion. If you look at the originial texts that were drawn into the bible, there is nothing said against witchcraft. It was brought in in the King James text, to give excuses to do battle on the Druids.
Those who are into fundamentalists & easily decieved certainly would use any excuse to get excited, jump up & down, scream & yell & draw attention to themselves.
I love the books. they have gotten so many children into reading & are a great read for adults as well.

Yes there are christians who dislike or even hate Harry Potter. There are witches who also dislike or hate Harry Potter. As with all things there will always be someone who dislikes or hates. For what ever reason.

I don"t think a Christian should watch, or read about Harry Potter. Why? Because the Bible says we are not to have anything to do with wizards. Read Deuteronomy 18:9-12 about this.

I'm not one. I call it "fear and loathing in literature". Hope you get the reference.
The reason is that parents feel like they are monitoring and protecting their children. And more so, any popular trend will have people who push their own agenda surfing on that wave of popularity.
Any time you hear an outcry from something that is clearly out of context you must weigh it with some skepticism and doubt.

Sin is not silly. When you trivialize sin you set yourself up for destruction. You have to understand who you are dealing with in God. Failure to understand the sternness of God's Punishment against disobedience has resulted in the destruction of many. If you want to get tons of kids reading, then do it the right way by opening God's Word instead of opening them up to Lucifer's magic. Teaching kids how to practice magic with the Devil is not something God takes lightly. True repentance and life safety can only come when one understands the seriousness of sin and it's consequences.
