The british Harrier takes of like a helicopter. The have been other prototypes which have rotors. The problem with these designs is that one the plane is moving horizontally, the rotor system is dead weight. Meaning you are flying something that you only need at the start and end of your trip. The power wasted could better be used carrying cargo.

Watch "True Lies" with Arnold Shwarzennegar, Jamie Lee-Curtis and a very young Eliza Dushku (the brunette in Bring It On).
He flies a Harrier- as seen in pics from link. That hovers and takes off like a helicopter- upwards at least. Uses jets, not air though.

Yes. The United States Marine Corps has such a plane. It's called the Osprey. It's wing tips up to lift the plane straight up. The wing then tips back to normal to let the plane fly away.

The autogyro is a conventional plane fuselage that uses a rotating wing which is driven by aerodynamic forces generated by the wing being drawn through the air by the engine to produce lift.

It flies more like an airplane, though.

possible american started making one (the stealth)but never took off like the hellicopter,now the britons were successfully by making one hoover off and carry more war heads
