I bought a laptop and installed XP Pro. I have an older desktop with XP Home. 1) Can I use the same XP Pro disk to update the desktop? Does MSoft allow that? 2) When going from Home to Pro, is it considered an upgrade, or will I have to do a clean install?

You need a separate license from Microsoft for each computer running XP Pro or XP Home. You can't legally use the same registration code on two different machines.

That said, if it's been at least six months since you updated your laptop, you should be able to get away with installing XP Pro on your desktop with no problem. It just wouldn't be legal. You can do an upgrade from Home to Pro, but it's much better to do a fresh install.

1) No, MSoft does NOT allow using the XP Pro disk to "upgrade" your XP Home. That would essentially be installing the one XP Pro disk on two systems at the same time. You would not be able to register the second system, so after 30 days it would stop working.

2) I suspect it can be done as an upgrade IF you get a second XP Pro disk. (See number 1 above).
