Forget 140bhp mate, you wouldn't get insured on it even if you could find one for 600 quid. If it's your first car you will wreck it within the year, and hopefully not do too much damage to yourself or other road users when you do. If you want to go fast, book yourself a track day at Cadwell Park, Donnington etc. Jensen Button might make it look easy, but you'll just make yourself look stupid. Ford Fiesta - cheap to run, cheap to insure, not bad handling - cheap parts and if you like doing work on it... it's a Ford, they're easy. Jap parts can be expensive depending on what you get. Learn to drive well before you learn to drive fast or end up another dead statistic.

Any General Motors car with a 3.8 engine in it will be good. They last, have power, low maintenance and are excellent on fuel mileage.
