I was told that code started with 9xxxx meant that the fruit was grown organically. But how about codes simply with 4 digits? What does each digit mean?
E.g. Red Delicious #4015

Fruit grown with chemicals have a PLU code with 4 numbers. Organically grown fruit have five numbers beginning with 9. Genetically grown fruit also have five numbers but starts with an 8.

The PLU codes also tells you were the fruit or veggie is from.

I used to work as a cashier at walmart . . and to my knowledge, the number on the fruit (e.g. #4015) is just the number used for the cashiers to identify what type of fruit it is so they know what to type into the cash register . . .

I use to work in a grocery store, and I always thought the codes were just to key in for the prices to come up right.
