Find a good PREMIUM brand puppy food.

There is a huge difference between premium and grocery brand dog foods. Premium brands, while more expensive, are typically more bang for the buck, so to speak. A good premium food will have much more nutrients per ounce and less filler (yellow ground corn and others) than a grocery brand. Because of this, your dog has to eat less of the premium brand for his daily dose of nutrients than he would a grocery brand. For example, a puppy that is about 10 weeks old and weighs approximately 10 pounds will need to eat 3/4-1 1/4 cup a day of Nutro. On the flip side, that same puppy would need to eat 1 1/4-2 cups of food per day of Kibbles and Bits.

Here's an added bonus: when your dog takes less in, he sends less out! A good premium brand food means less poop to scoop!

Examples of premium brand foods: Nutro, Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Eukanuba, Science Diet, ProPlan, Royal Canin, Authority--Premium brands are found at specialty stores only.

Examples of grocery brand foods: Purina One, Beneful, Dog/Puppy Chow (not good!), Ol'Roy (even worse!), Pedigree, Iams, Kibbles n Bits and anything else you can purchase at a grocery store.

You may want to consider a puppy food that's specially formulated specifically for smaller dogs. Royal Canin is the only brandname out there that currently offers a "baby dog" formula for small breed puppies up to 8 weeks of age. Once they reach 8 weeks, they graduate up to the small breed puppy formula.

The benefits of using a formula specifically made for small breeds is that it is tailored to a small breed's metabolism and growth patterns. Unlike larger dogs, most of the growth of a small dog breed occurs in the first 6 months of life. On average, it gains 20 grams per day and after 10 months it has multiplied its birth weight by 20 times. Because of this, its food must therefore supply all the energy it needs for this fast paced development.

Before you commit to any specific brand, you should take a look at the ingredients. They are listed in order of whichever ingredient is used the most in that particualr formula. You want to find a formula that lists a type of meat (chicken or chicken meal, lamb or lamb meal, beef or beef meal, fish) as the first ingredient. Do NOT go for anything that says " by-products". By-products are typically feet, beaks, and insides that you or I would not like to eat. Look out for large quantities of corn as well, as this is a filler that doesn't offer a whole lot of nutritional value to your dog.

Hopefully this helps you out some. Congrats on your new pup.

I have to say, I am rather concerned that you are getting a puppy and don't know what to feed it. By now you should be rather educated about what you are going to do with a dog.

Especially given that you are getting it on friday. By this time, you should already have it's food (the breeder should tell you what kind), it's crate, a bed (or some such sleeping item)dishes, And a vet appt

You need to ask the breeder what they have been feeding it. Being 8wks old, she should be on puppy food. Mix the hard food in a dish with a little warm water for the developing puppy teeth. Make sure you get a good puppy food, see what the breeder recommends, and DO NOT start changing foods on her because it can cause digestive problems. If for whatever reason you need to change foods on hr, do it transitionally, mix it with the other until you have been able to replace it comoletely, so that her tummy isn't messed up.

You need to ask the breeder and your puppy as you don't want to change food to fast on one so young. What ever it is it has to be for puppies.
