The best and cheapest place to sleep, by far its called La Bassilica di San Pietro.

Its very luxurious decorated in gold and they dont actually charge you, but they accept donations.

There its another place I think its called Castelgandolfo but only accept guys wearing skirts..maybe if you are scottish they let you in.

You can Have a bath in La Fontana Di Trevi, and collect few coins while you there...

There is one called "Happy Days" there, but remember that Rome has a very good (and east to use) metro, so you can stay a little further away. As far as hostels go, I would check out Twizi.com (they list places to stay that cost less than 25 dollars) Their Rome page has a map of all the hostels so you know what hostel is near what monuments. Have a look at www.venere.com. When I was looking for accomodation in Rome I found lots of very reasonable places near to the Vatican. You can search by area, accommodation type, there are photos and customer feedback.

Buona fortuna.
