Choose a warm color for the dining room. I love yellowish-gold. It's warm, soothing and can be mixed with just about any other color. In the spring and summer you can accent with blue flowers, candles, dishes for a cheerful, springy look. In the winter and fall, cozy it up with red or orange. Be careful when choosing a yellow paint though. I was told that yellow, more than any other color, really intensifies when it's on the wall. Choose lighter than you think you should and sample an area first, looking at it in all lights. I just painted my dining room with a Glidden color called "Newborn" and love it.

If your furniture is white or a pine color, paint the ceiling barely blue and the walls flat black and lay a jet black rug. OR paint it a delicate sage green that's on the grayish side of the color spectrum. An area oriental rug that's predominantly beige with hints of red and different shades of green and maybe a dash of blue in it would look great under the table if you have a hardwood floor. Or yet again, paint one or two walls a deep low gloss red and the other walls beige or dirty pale yellow.

I painted mine a medium blue, like a darker sky blue. Here in North Carolina we call it "Carolina Blue" like the color UNC uses. I have white sheer curtains and people say they feel like their in "heaven" when they go in there. It's a very soft and peaceful color.
