I do believe they were Jews. Abraham was the founder and Moses took them out of servitude. According to what most muslims, that I see interviewed about their faith, say is that Moses and Abraham are recognised as profits.

Neither was Jesus born at the time of Abraham or Moses, but they are in Christian tradition.
These were great people whose acts were remembered over the centuries. More than one religion claimed them as forefathers.
You must remember that even Jesus is an important person in Islam; he isn't seen as the Son of God, but as a Prophet.
So in the eyes of Muslims, the religion evolved past Abraham/Moses, past Jesus, and the last prophet was Muhammed.
Christians, on the other hand, stop at Jesus.
May be another religion will crop up and claim a latter person as successor of Muhammed and claim the same 'lineage'.
But I always feel we should focus on the similarities between the religions, not the differences. Muhammed's message isn't that different from that of Jesus.

Islam is not a racist religion and Muslims (who follow Islam) are not from a particular community or race.
"Jews" are supposed to be decendants of Judah, a (great?) grandson of Abraham. Both the arabs and jews are decendants of Abraham through ishmael and Isaac and have been proved to be genetically similar.
Muslims believe (as told in the Quran) that every single nation or group on earth was sent a guide or a messenger. They all came with the same basic message and people that followed this message were all "Muslims". When the last testament (the quran) was revealed by the last messenger (Muhammad), the name "Islam" was given to the religion of the "Muslims".

Islam came in stages, and it has been existed for a looong time, since the days of Adam and Eve. The name of the religion that Abraham/Moses/other prophets brought to their people was not Islam yet, but they're all the very foundation of Islam. They all believe in the same God. Those religions are actually one and the same, although the "real" Islam had not come before Muhammad.

ok...here we go again 4 the gajillionth time....the word Islam means finding inner peace through accepting and submitting to the one true God....that's the whole meaning and the backbone of all the teachings of the religion....Islam is the meaning of the message not a name that was given 2 the religion by someone. Moreover, we believe that all the prophets of the Abrahamic faith were teaching this same exact message. Therefore, they are muslims bc they believed in this message. Again, I repeat the word Islam was not given as a name to the religion by the followers or after some historical figure or nation....it is the meaning of the message of God.

I will simplify history as much as possible:
God talks to Moses and he says worship only me, and dont associate me with nothing: destroy ur idols.
Moses come down from the mountain carryin the ten commandments with him and tell the people: dont worship no one but God.
People follows this sometimes, they got their freedom and go searchin the promise land. In some point of the way "changed" the original message and believe they are the choosen people, and they think God is only for them.
Jesus comes along, God doesnt speak directly to him, but still he was inspired with a message that pretends to "correct" the biased jewish thinking and then he says to the jews: hey we are wrong, this religions belongs to everyone in this earth and in this universe, God is love for all and we shall not take advantage on people´s needs, so we should not charge interests when we gives loans.
Jews get up set to Jesus, becoz he is an economical and political threat. They killed them. Jesus dont leave no written testimony nor message: the message starts to be changed and then people starts to say Jesus is Son of God. So once again the original message was adultered.
Constantino converts to Christianity coz in order to unify his empire he needs a common belief. He choses the gospels he wants and he (with the Church) invents the concept of the Holy Trinity that also fits and suits with the geological model they used to understand the universe and which was given by Ptolemy, the greek. SO, as they believe earth was the center of the universe, saying Jesus as human, is part of the divinity matches and make sense with this antropocentrical perception of the universe.
Of course the Galileo came and he was victim of the catholic Church becoz of his findings were also a threat. Any way...
6 centuries later (of Jesus) ...Mohamed came along, Gabriel de Arcangel spoke to him and told him: u have to go out and "correct" the message, people missunderstad Jesus who was a prophet of God and now they are worshiping him as if they were God...so pls go out and tell the world they have to come to the right path again and worship only Him...so Mohamed did.
So this is why in Sura Fatiha (the first of the Quran) there is this recitation that among other things say "show us the straight path, dont let us follow the path that followed those who earned ur anger (the jews) nor the path that followed those who strayed (Christians)
So this is why muslims knows that Moses and Jesus and Abraham were the first muslims on earth. It doesnt have to do with Mohamed, it has to do with the fact that they worship only God and they didnt praised Jesus. Their feith were authentic, they were real monotheists.
So after studying this an other sources u come to the point where everything makes sense and sometimes, happens like it happens to me: I adopted the religion.

Islam means "submission to the will of God." Somebody who does this, is therefore called a Muslim.
Abraham and Moses both submitted to the will of God. Therefore they were both Muslims.
Islam has existed since our ancestor Adam. Adam submitted to the will of God ( after his minor error - the test given to him so that he and his wife would know the difference between right and wrong). Adam was the first Prophet of God and the first human being to be a Muslim, along with his wife.

Islam existed since Adam-pbuh was created. Islam did not come from somewhere in the middle of history of mankind. PEOPLE WHO STARTED WORSHIPPING EACH OF THE PROPHETS CREATED THEIR INDIVIDUAL RELIGIONS. but they all followed ONE GOD.
Islam means -- peace, obedience and submission to ONE GOD. so they all followed Islam. people took them for Gods. each prophets brought along with them Holy books that were just a little modified according to the people of those times and the sins they comitted.
but even here Allah says that jews, christians and muslims are -- PEOPLE OF THE BOOK, becoz they all are branches of same religion.

Muslims believe that these prophets, and all other prophets including Noah and Adam, came with essentially the same message and creed that is today called "Islam": to worship one God and reject false deities.
that's why they call these prophets muslims, because they called for the same message that was preached by Mohammed
