I can see how you would ask that, as, to the outsider, it may appear so. Symptoms of BDD include:
* Preoccupation with and evaluation of appearance
* Degree of self-consciousness and feelings of discomfort in public
* Tendency to overvalue appearance in determining overall self-worth
* Avoidance of social situations and physical contact with others
* Excessive altering of one's appearance through grooming, cosmetics or dress
* Tendency to frequently check one's appearance, perform repetitive grooming and seek reassurance from others

However, NO, it's not about vanity. People with severe BDD may drop out of school, quit their jobs or avoid leaving their homes. In the most severe cases, people with BDD may consider or attempt suicide. Body dysmorphic disorder causes people excessive anxiety and distress, often impairing their social life and performance at school or work. People with BDD may find it difficult to meet new people or make friends because of intense fear that their appearance might be judged in a negative way. In severe cases of BDD, a person may severely limit contact with other people in an attempt to avoid having others see the perceived physical flaw.

Imagine if you couldn't leave your house, work, or talk with other people because you were absolutely sure your face was deformed. No, that's not vanity. That's an illness.

I think what you mean is body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). It is a real but not very common disorder that was acknowledged by the American Psychiatric Association in 1987.

This disorder goes beyond simply being vain. People who have this problem find it difficult to function outside obsessive thoughts about parts of their appearance, and it impairs their work, social or personal functioning.

I see your looking for a reaction but still think your a complete fool !!!
I have this condition alongside an anxiety disorder and it takes all your energy all day an night, it never gos away for me even though im alot better now than i was(not goin out hardly at all becasue of the pre occupation that something is wrong with somewere). I am getting better now but still have bad days and am awaiting therapy. there are alot of people with it worse than me and to be honest it had been complete hell for a twenty year old lad, so i feel for them.
You obviously have no understanding of mental illness and its people like you who make people suffering from it ashamed to speak to other people, me however im not arsed with plebs like you, so hope you have a bad life!

one might think that but sufferers do more than be vain, they actually perceive themselves differently than others and go to great lengths to fix the 'problem's like preforming their own surgery on themselves

NO

Try researching BDD and you will find out why not for yourself

People mutilate themselves because of this disorder and you think it's VANITY.

no, it's not being vein at all, quite the opposite. it's when a person has an opposite view of their body than every1 else. they may see themselves as being overweight when they r really painfully thin.
