Even I did my engineering with free books.
But the only place you could find them is the bookshelf of your seniors who have already cleared those exams (only if you keep good terms with them)

Try second hand bookshop, books not free but you can pick up some real bargains
Other source is people clearing out their house, and having a garage sale

Search for an online forum on orkut which has links to free E-books in almost everything

Try a local university or college library. Sometimes there is faculty around to help you out as well.
