They shoud grow up. Dental care is painless these days and lack of dental care has serious consequences like gum disease and advanced cavities.

Go anyway. It is really scary but you can find some really gentle dentists out there that make sure their patients are at ease.
My first experience as a kid was not with a pleasant dentist and I never wanted to go back. It worked that we didn't have much money but then when I became an adult, I procrastinated too long.
Now I am in a job with terrible dental insurance and I need a ton of work done. I'm still too young for dentures but I may wind up needing them before long.
It can also lead to other health problems if you don't take care of your teeth.
Go to the dentist now!

Okay something I really know about. I am nearing 60 and have been afraid of going to the dentist since I was a child. Find a dentist who practices sedation dentistry. They will give you an oral sedative which will totally relax you and enable you to get through the necessary procedures. The dentist will usually do more than one procedure and you will have to go fewer times. Try to get through the cleaning and initial exam on your own. You may never be able to overcome this fear but at least this way you will know that you are doing the best that you can for yourself.

Go to a pediatric dentist who is known to be very understanding and caters to patients who are naturally nervous and squirmy. Make sure that he is aware of your anxiety. Also ask your favorite friend or family member. I really good doctor will allow them to come into the exam room. I would check this out before making my appt. My kids are 12 and 13 and I always sit with them and rub their legs or hold their hands during their visits. It just makes them feel more comfortable.

What you should NOT do is to drink an alcoholic beverage! I tried it and discovered that dental anesthesia is ineffective if alcohol is in your system. Ask for the best relaxants the dentist has. Take a friend or relative to drive you home, take some Advil, take a long nap.

I am absolutley terrified of the dentist I am 26 and have only been twice. I had to find a dentist that was caring and willing to help me with my fear. Which I eventually did, I wont lie it took a while and he was expensive. But well worth it. He gave 6 shots of novacaine, and gas'ed me twice. It helped with the fear and the pain....Good luck hun.

get over it. There's nothing bad happening there! You'll get an injection for pain. There are so much worse things as the dentists!!!!
and clean your teeth at least every evening!
