I just finished reading a book that said before Islam came to be there was a religion in Arabia called Sabianism. Which worshiped the sun, moon, stars and planets. The book said that the moon was called Allah and that is where Muhammad took the name for God from. Is this true? If it is not true, then could you please explain why there is a moon on every Muslim nations' flag? Just curious. thanks for your answers ahead of time.

sabianism was not practiced in Arabia, it was mainly practiced in Persia with few followers in Arabia. Originally since Ishmael is the father of Arabs his descendants were followers of the Abrahamic faith, and worshipped the one true God who is called in Arabic Allah. However, after many years they diverted from that original creed and started associating other dieties with Allah....they made up myths that Allah had three daughters Allat (notice the T) which is the goddess of the moon, Al Ozza (goddess of the sun), and Minnat (the goddess of the stars). Those pagan Arabs did not deny Allah they just worshipped his so-called daughters because they believed that the only to get close to Allah is by worshipping his daughters. When prophet Mohammad came he started to teach people to go back to the Abrahamic creed of worshipping the one and true God only, or in his arabic tongue Allah (with the H), and not the other dieties that were made up and falsely associated with God. Muslims in general whether Arabs or not use the word Allah to refer to God because it cannot be pluralized or associated with a gender. Moreover, there isn't a moon on all the islamic nations' flags. The moon or the crescent symbol was originally introduced by the ottoman empire many years after Islam. Although this is only a speculation on my part, I believe the ottomans chose the crescent because the Islamic calendar is a lunar year since we have to check for the crescent of the new month to detect certain occasions such as the beginning of Ramadan or Eid al Fitr.

This is the first time I came across the information as provided by you that "The book said that the moon was called Allah and that is where Muhammad took the name for God from."

Could you please provide some reference of the stated book?

By the way, hope your information provided are not falling under the following category:

blaspheme v. (-ming) 1 use religious names irreverently; treat a religious or sacred subject irreverently. 2 talk irreverently about; use blasphemy against. [Greek blasphemeo]

blasphemy n. (pl. -ies) 1 irreverent talk or treatment of a religious or sacred thing. 2 instance of this. blasphemous adj.

We have enough controversy and backlashes surrounding religions, particularly Islam and its followers. Please be objective and promote your own faith, if you like, without hurting the feelings of others. Thank you.

no sir, Allah is the name of the God who created you, created me, and created the moon, sun, stars, earth and everything exist.

about why do you find moon on the top of mosques or flags. it's because there is a month in Islam called the month of Ramadan, this is the month of which muslims fast, this is the month of which the Quran came down. this month is so special. we tell the beginning of this month by looking at the shape of the moon. if the moon has been shaped in a certain way then we declare the beginning of the month of Ramadan. it's a way of decoration .

That is interesting. What was the name of the book you read.

It's probably Banned in Islam!

It is true many people had Gods of stone or nature, like wind and fire and stars and planets.
