Up until now, we've given her a disposable 35mm cameras to take pictures with. I'm looking for a digital camera that's simple, fairly inexpensive and sturdy.

Here are some do's and don'ts

Do's
Get her a camera thats weatherproof, so it can be in rain. This is generally a good idea.
Get her a camera on sale!
Get her one with 5 or 6 megapixels. Or else her photo's will look pixelated.

Don't
Get an extended warranty. This is a rip off.
Get her one with knobs on it. This will make it complicated, if she doesn't know what the little symbols are.
Trust the salesmen. (thats a DON'T, remember?)

I suggest an Olympus stylus 600. They just got replaced, so stores are doing clearences for as low as $150-$200.

I recommend the Olympus Stylus 850SW. Why? 2 motives: a million, its water-resistant to 10 feet and a pair of, its shockproof to a 5 foot drop. on account that dropping and drowning are the maximum well liked killers of digital cameras you get rid of the two with the 850SW. definite, you could spend much less yet while she drops it or gets it moist and he or she's crying using fact her digicam is ruined you will possibly be paying for her yet another one. scale back a number of her different provides if mandatory and get her the 850SW. next summer season she would be in a position to take it to the sea coast or pool and her acquaintances would be so jealous using fact they had to leave their cameras at abode.

i don't know about a 7 year old getting and after that handling a digital camera on her own. Let her handle a regular camera first then if she does a good job with that, then you can teach her to handle a digital camera. I don't know thats my opinion on this.
