They swore their gods would live forever, they certainly lived (in the heart and minds of those that followed them) for longer than our modern religions
But they were ultimately replaced by new ones through hundreds of years of debate, argument and changes in government; people finally became convinced that the new mono-theist philosophies were the ones to follow
What conditions would need to change, for new gods to be bought into modern society.
