They swore their gods would live forever, they certainly lived (in the heart and minds of those that followed them) for longer than our modern religions

But they were ultimately replaced by new ones through hundreds of years of debate, argument and changes in government; people finally became convinced that the new mono-theist philosophies were the ones to follow

What conditions would need to change, for new gods to be bought into modern society.

I believe the trend will be less gods due to all the new info we have now that others never had. Science will kill the influence of the gods eventually, although being spiritual will continue.

Only the names have changed, the philosophies advanced. The same is currently happening in modernity as societies are faced with the questions that modernity poses. It took a long time for every person to simply accept the names and the philosophies are ever expanding and explaining things.

A great example is the word "God" in English. What does it mean? Well it depends on who is using the word. I'm a Hindu and I believe in "God". I have a Jewish friend who believes in "God" and I have Christian and Muslim friends who also believe in "God". I even have Pagan friends who believe in "God". Now this one word seems to be used by a lot of different religions, spiritual traditions, and philosophies....so, what does it mean? Once upon a time that used to be just a name of a god used in one religion...that's no longer the case. Added to this one example, take a look at how modern religions either embrace or reject science and how they come about in their philosophies to explain why they embrace or reject it.

Changes are happening all the time. The difference is that no one is being forced to convert to the official "state" religion this time.

The ancient greeks and romans thought their gods would live forever?

Ahaha,
and so do the religious folks of today.
As knowledge and reason increases, the gods
appear to carry less and less significance.
That is a good thing .
Eventually we will realize and admit that we are
the Gods.

First off, I think any new gods will need to have the power to save themselves instead of the worshippers rushing into the home to save their "god" from the fire. Wasn't this always the problem with false gods in Hebrew history. They always failed at any task.

We do not need anything false. What we do need is to see our God as the true and living God. At least we won't have to save Him from fire, hail, and sleet, and all sorts of natural disasters!
