I work for a company that ships a lot of there Plasma and LCD TV'd laying flat and I am curious if this will hurt them in the long run.

I seriously doubt this being that I have seen plasma TV's mounted on both the ceiling and in the floor under a thick piece of glass.

I think the real issue behind laying it flat is that you do not want the weight of anything to get on top of the screen. EVen though the screen surface is relatively durable it is still fragile and likely to break if you stack several on top of each other.

while laying a plasma set on its face in the short term should not cause any problems-say moving the set upstairs to another room. it is unadvisable to transport a plasma/lcd tv in a horizontal position for any length of time because of the weight of the electronics in the back of the set. the display panel of almost all plasma sets is made of glass which has huge strength when force is applied laterally but can easily fracture if force is applied to the front or rear of the panel so laying the display on its face can cause the weight of the electronics to place pressure on the rear of the display panel while the movement of transport is taking place.
