There are seven or more forms of hepatitis and the means of spread is different for different types. Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are spread by blood and body fluids contact and Hepatitis A is spread by what is called the fecal/oral route.

Blood and body fluid spread require close contact with secretions like semen, vaginal fluid, spinal fluid, and of course blood. They can be spread by simple contact of one of these fluids with any break in the skin, through needles, by sexual contact, by transfusion and so forth.

Fecal/oral spread happens because the organism is present in the digestive system which then contaminates food or water and this is consumed by another person who will then contract the infection. Obviously, poor hygiene is a big factor in this kind of spread.

Currently we have blood tests in common use to detect Hepatitis A, B, and C. There are vaccines to help prevent HepA and HepB, but none yet for HepC, HepD, or or any of the others.

In addition to the hepatitis infection itself, which can be life-threatening, having hepatitis greatly increases the risk of developing liver failure or liver cancer.

Hepatitis A --- Through food and water, sexual route, blood, needle prick.
Hepatitis E ---- Food and water.
Hepatitis B and C --- Blood, needle prick, sexual route, through the placenta during birth in a baby, from an infected mother.
Hepatis D can occur only if hepatitis B is already present.
Hepatis F does not exist. Hepatitis G is like C.

Hepatitis A spreads through contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B and C generally spreads through contaminated needles (used by IV drug users). Hepatitis C can also spread through transfusion of contaminated blood or from a mother (infected with Hepatitis C) to the newborn during delivery (the maternal-fetal route).

hep a is derived from contamination with fecies
hep b is contracted through bodily fluids
*hep c is contracted through tainted blood only
hep d is only contracted if you have hep b
hep e is contracted similar to hep a but is rare in the united states

hepatitis c is not easily transmitted during sexual relations unless there is a blood to blood transfer. the hcv corpuscles found in regular untainted secretions are dead virus cells that are not transmittable.
