People with low self esteem will use this method to become liked and get some positive feedback on a personality trait. Once they start getting positive feedback they will most likely take it and run with it. Some people even create false lives completely. They may suffer low self esteem for alot of reasons but perhaps they were shunned from a group of friends, constantly made fun of for something or another, or suffer anxiety problems and have isolated themselves so they may try anything to get a new friend.
Some people also were not taught while growing up that it is ok to be who you are or to follow your heart and what makes you happy. They may also not have been taught to decipher between good and bad personality types or how to stand up for yourself when someone treats you bad. They may just end up with the wrong people and start assuming that way of living. Also, many peoples parents may have shunned them or unknowingly caused them distress when their expectations didn't match up with the child's personality type or interests. a gay kid coming from an anti-gay family will have many self esteem issues for instance

Why do you worry about that? That's their problem not yours. Enjoy who you are and concentrate on yourself. You can't change other people and what they do or think, that's a lot of wasted energy that you could use having fun. When I'm around people like that I just smile and say to myself, "boy, I'm glad I'm not you!" Life's too short for such trivia, enjoy being alive!

Insecurity, low self-esteem, no confidence. Maybe they really don't like who they are and are trying to emulate someone they respect. Accepting oneself comes with maturity. Some of us get there sooner than others.
