Escalators take up more space and you need a well constructed series of them to reach higher floors. It also takes logner to get to higher floors and people have to keep moving, which though quicker and easier than stairs still can tire people out or bore them. That said escalators have less problems mechanically and even when shut down do not deny access to areas as they can be used as stairs in the event of an emergency or fire.

Elevators have more mechanical hazards, need more maintenance and though most people have learnt to handle them some are still claustrophobic. Crowded elevators make for an unpleasant ride and the waiting for one to arrive or fidning one full can add to frustration. But they are the fastest way to traverse many floors of a building.

Escalators are oten used to convey large crowds of people from one level to the next level; perhaps a large group getting out of a theater. Lifts (elevators) are often used to convey smaller groups of people between multiple levels where a few get on or off at each stop (perhaps an office building or apartment complex). Where ther are escalators there usually must also be elevators available for people in wheelchairs or with problems walking or balancing. Escalators run continuously (even with no people) whereas elevators operate only when called to a floor or when a button is pressed for a selected floor. If electricity is lost, escalators can still be used as stairs while elevators may strand occupants. Elevators should be avoided if there is a fire in the building because the fire may melt the call button and cause the elevator to stop and open exactly where there is intense fire.

Escalator allows large no. of persons at a time to to use, whereas lifts allows limited persons to use at a time.
Escalator is highly useful for public place like, railway station, shopping malls, etc.where no. of users is high, whereas lift is more useful in residential or commercial building, where no. of users is comparatively low.
In case of power failure, escalator may be used as a staircase, whereas in lift one may get stuck, if not autogenset is there.
In case of sudden breakdown: users can safely use the escalator as a s/r case, whereas in case of lift-users get stuck.
In escalator users feel free & secured, whereas in case of lift there is uncertainty.
