The passport was issued in 2001 and has the digital machine readable two lines of text at the bottom of the photo page. It expired in 2006 (July) but has been extended to 2011 by a stamp and signature from my local passport office in Naples.

I don't know if this helps or not I traveled on a US passport that had expired and extended by US passport agency for several years out of the country many times some times I would be ask about it, but never any problems. Good luck

If it has been extended, it is good. Remember that the Homeland Security will probably do a background check on you possible. They are pretty careful nowadays.
