I have been there several times. Contrary to what Jo Ann wrote, most people I know do not like Shenzhen. As you probably know, it is the closest city in China to Hong Kong. And Shenzhen was one of the first "Special Economic Zones" (SEZ) in China... those were the areas in which the people (earlier than the rest of the country) were basically allowed to live like Capitalists. Shenzhen attracted a lot of people from throughout China who were looking to make money, and that included undesirables who wanted easy money. With the economic success of the SEZ's such as Shenzhen, the entire country later opened up.
With Hong Kong property prices and labor/wages, etc, becoming so expensive, a lot of the city's manufacturing moved to Shenzhen, which helped the city to prosper. Along with that, the Hong Kongers find Shenzhen to be much cheaper that Hong Kong, so they go there in droves (even still) to get cheap things, which includes products produced in factories, food and even women. I have heard lots of stories of the dangers in Shenzhen, people being kidnapped, killed, etc. However, I should say that not all of the city is rough. Most recently when I went there, I found that it has been cleaned up a lot. And it is actually one of the most modern and developed cities in China.
Are you planning on going there? Or why were you asking that question? If you are, I would assume that you will be going via Hong Kong. It is quite easy to get there from Hong Kong on the KCR (Kowloon Canton Railway) or by bus to the border. Then you will need your passport with a visa to China to cross into Shenzhen.
Good luck over there, wei q!

Things to Do in Shenzhen
-Don't miss the replica of the Taj Mahal here. Quite a wonderful sight. It is rather large and there is great detail in the carvings and structure. If I am correct, it is supposed to be one-fifth the size of the real Taj Mahal.
-Windows on the World This park shows you the world in miniature . It's next to Splendid China and the The China Folk Culture Villages. Admission: ¥ 100 Opening Times: 8:00 - 22:00

Yes a couple of months ago via Hong Kong. Quite convienient to travel there by train. The trains stops at the border town of Lo Wu and exit there and you can apply the visa as the immigration dept will process your visa on the spot. It depends on the crowd and clearance can be as fast as 30 minutes to 3 hours or more. I do not know what passport you are holding as there are different requirements. Please check with the China Embassy.
Overall a big bustling city. Try to visit Windows to the World, Splendid China as well as Dongmen Shopping district. Shenzhen can offer alot if you know where to go. Do take care of your belongings as pickpocket is quite rampant especially in Lo Wu train station. My mum was one of the victim even though numerous reminder were told by the tourist guide to becareful of them.

been there a few time, first in 1984, last in June 2006. Came back with suitcases full of goodies...it used to be a small fishing village back in the early 80s, it was the first SEZ and is now the flagship of modern consumerism and foreign investment in China...
