Difficult to say exactly what your problem is with so little information to analyze. I suggest you try to import the data and see if it is just one data sheet that's corrupt. Hopefully the others will be readable.

Steps:

1) Open a new Excel file, completely blank.
2) Click on Data, choose "Import external data"
3) Navigate to where the file is, highlight, click open
4) Choose the individual sheet you want to import. Click OK

This will bring in the data and some basic formatting such as fonts and column widths. It will not bring in conditional formatting, colors or borders. Hopefully the corruption is in something you don't need and hopefully the rest is usable.

This usually happens when you open excel file created in a computer with regional settings not found in the default language pack of Windows, open it in a default language pack windowXP.
It seams tough
Lets say it again
When you have two computers Co1 and Co2, Co1 has a special language pack (Say Chinese) and you created the excel file (Or changed it) in Co1 using these characters.
now Co2 which does not have Chinese language will not be able to open Chinese characters.

What you need is to update the Co2 with Chinese language pack

I hope you got me here
