Your local United Way may be able to give you some suggestions. As a hub for many local agencies they are aware of some of the volunteer opportunities available. You also could simply approach a local agency your interested in working for. Most all local public libraries use volunteers as do the local Red Cross chapters and many local Parks and Recreation Departments.

Aside from VolunteerMatch.org and Craigslist.com (which are both great resources), you may want to consider doing some flexible volunteerism.

Flexible volunteering allows you to help out in your community whenever you have the time or feel like doing some good. You don't have to agree to a set schedule and can work with anyone you want.

CharityGuide.org - http://www.charityguide.org/volunteer/child-protection.htm - offers tons of flexible volunteerism ideas.

One that I'm interested in trying (and may be something you're interested in too) is making newborn baby supply kits - http://www.charityguide.org/volunteer/fewhours/baby-supply-kits.htm

Whatever you decide to do, good luck with your volunteering - it's great to see someone interested in making a difference!

I vote going to several churches in the community.......and choose the one you want.........most churches simply participate in larger one not operated by the churches....ex. habitat for humanity, metro missions to feed the poor, prison ministry, and many many more. At least you'll get an idea of what is needed in your community.

Look around you. What do you see others doing? What service organizations do you see? My personal favorite is the Lions. They are the worlds largest service organization and do a lot of good things.

Try asking in the local library about any groups in your area, they usually have the information there or at your local council office.
