"What" is a word which is used interrogatively and it is usually used in the start of an interrogative sentence, also for asking for the choice from an indefenite number or a statement of amount,

For example "What is your name?"

It can also be used as an interrogative for asking a particular kind of thing. Or it can be used to denote exclaimation

For example "What a beautiful sight". And such others
Thus the word "What" has a lot of uses.

Good luck.
