you can partition the disk as part of the linux installation however if you want to partition beforehand then you should use a program like partition magic. The file format should be ext3, not ntfs or fat(32).

If you want to share data (read and write acess) between the linux and XP then you need to create another partition which should be formatted in fat32 as ntfs (the default and better option for xp) will cause disk corruption.

it is likely that your hard drive is just partitioned in to one partition using the full drive , if that is the case you will have to delete the large partition and make 2 smaller ones before you can start
once you have done that you then need to format the partition that windows XP is to go on then load XP and all your drivers, secondly your version of Linux (I found Ubuntu the best as it dual boots) should be loaded on the second partition (I think Unbuntu will format the 2nd partition during installation)

Dont worry ...create a drive frm free space at the last of ur Drive sequence with near about 6GB..OK then Start installation ..

In middle of installation choose Manual Partitioning and then select / drive and /root drive and at last Swap drive..Enjoy

liux use a different type of partition which would not be viewable in windows. linux partion can be done by linux cd or dvd. u can use version of linux which does not need installation but there are many limitations in it. theses cds are available with many computer magzines.
